{"id":696,"date":"2012-03-13T17:14:11","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T17:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ieseg.fr\/?page_id=696"},"modified":"2015-10-13T12:28:01","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T10:28:01","slug":"french-education-system","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ieseg.fr\/en\/life-at-ieseg\/practical-information\/french-education-system\/","title":{"rendered":"French Education System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In France, Higher Education consists of the following three main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Public Universities<\/li>\n<li>Grandes \u00c9coles: mostly Business or Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Others Specialized Schools such as: Art, Architecture, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Public Universities<\/h2>\n<p>France&#8217;s public universities are funded by the national government, which closely regulates the &#8220;national diplomas&#8221; granted by the universities. This system allows the universities to offer students an excellent education in all disciplines at a very affordable price.<\/p>\n<p>Since French public universities have a legal obligation to accept all candidates of the region who hold a <em>Baccalaur\u00e9at <\/em>(French high school diploma), admission is often not very selective. Most of the programs are taught in French and the class size is much larger than the <em>Grande \u00c9coles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Grandes \u00c9coles<\/h2>\n<p>This uniquely French term refers to institutions that may be either public or private. The two largest groups of <em>Grandes \u00c9coles<\/em> are\u00a0Schools of Engineering and Schools of\u00a0Management, but there are also the <em>\u00c9coles Normales Sup\u00e9rieures<\/em> (ENS), the institutes of political studies (IEP), veterinary schools, and other schools in a variety of specialized areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Grandes \u00c9coles are very selective while admission is through rigorous written and oral exams. \u00a0\u00a0The traditional Grande \u00c9coles select candidates among those who have completed two years of dedicated preparatory classes after graduating from high school. Although this is not always the case, as an increasing number of students are now interested in the &#8220;Post-Bac Grandes \u00c9coles&#8221;, such as I\u00c9SEG (currently ranked 1<sup>st<\/sup> in France), which selects students directly after high school \u2013 a concept more aligned with international standards. Students will then study for 5 years (3 years BBA + 2 years MSc in management) and receive the prestigious national diploma. Many Grandes \u00c9coles also offer shorter master programs, such as MBA, MIB (Master of International Business), Mast\u00e8re Sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The Grandes \u00c9coles do not have large student bodies (3,000 &#8211; 6000). Degree programs in the G<em>randes \u00c9coles<\/em> usually include international internships and study abroad opportunities.
