Trading, strategy, and challenge: an immersive experience by IÉSEG Finance

To learn finance effectively, one must experience it firsthand—a principle IÉSEG Finance has fully embraced. Through its trading competition, now one of its flagship events, the association offers students a full immersion into the world of financial markets, where every decision becomes an opportunity to grow.

When you’re young, you often want to experiment before you learn. The best way is to have real experience—to make your own mistakes, especially when they carry no real-world consequences,” explains Titouan LORTHIOIR, President of IÉSEG Finance Lille.

Bringing finance to life

IÉSEG Finance democratizes a discipline often perceived as complex. “The goal is to make finance accessible to everyone without compromising on quality,” Titouan adds. Between producing financial reports, organizing events, and building professional partnerships, the association creates a stimulating environment for everyone to progress.

More than just a learning framework, it cultivates a strong sense of community. “We want to develop a true family spirit within the association while building an extensive professional network. The goal is to pull each other up,” he explains.

Risk-free experimentation for deeper understanding

The trading competition aims to give students their first encounter with market realities in a completely secure environment. No real money is at stake. The focus is purely educational: experiment, test, fail, and learn.

Following an introductory workshop to master trading basics and the eToro platform, participants take the plunge. From analysis and capital allocation to risk management and diversification, theory quickly gives way to strategy. It’s a true deep dive into the daily life of traders.

Beyond performance, the competition is rooted in awareness. From the start, students are educated on market realities and the risks inherent in decision-making. Organizers particularly emphasize the influence of cognitive biases: fear of loss, impulsive reactions, or overconfidence can quickly lead to irrational choices. “In financial markets, retail investors often rely on emotions—panic selling or buying into euphoria. Everyone needs to be aware of this to perform,” Titouan warns.

The objective is clear: debunk the image of trading as a game. “The idea isn’t to create a ‘Casino 2.0,’ but to offer genuine immersion,” he adds. Participants learn the necessity of investing only what they are prepared to lose and adopting a thoughtful, calculated approach.

By placing risk awareness at the heart of the experience, IÉSEG Finance encourages professional reflexes: discipline, composure, and analytical thinking—all essential for navigating a dynamic and demanding financial landscape.

A catalyst for skills and vocations

Participating in this competition is a first step toward expertise. Students learn to structure their thinking, defend their strategic choices, and adopt a critical perspective on market fluctuations.

It is also a human experience. Surrounded by fellow enthusiasts, participants exchange ideas, challenge viewpoints, and expand their networks. For some, it even reveals a career path.

The presence of industry professionals (financial analysts and traders), as well as the Head of eToro France, further bolsters this dimension. Their feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, praising an “exciting” event that unites people around a common cause and bridges the gap between academia and real-world practice.

A success that unites

Each edition attracts a wide range of profiles, from curious novices to seasoned students. This diversity creates a stimulating dynamic where everyone progresses at their own pace. However, Titouan observes that “students today arrive with more knowledge, thanks to AI and the internet. Some already master advanced practices, while others are just starting out but are eager to learn”—a testament to the growing interest in financial issues.

In this latest edition, nearly 15% of the sixty participants ended the competition with a positive balance. As for the top three performers, they were rewarded with specialized trading and investment training worth between €500 and €2,000, provided by their partner Alti Trading. It’s a golden opportunity to deepen their knowledge and continue their skill development.

Training tomorrow’s talent today

By bridging the gap between theory and practice, IÉSEG Finance helps students build confidence and better prepare for the future.

Here, finance is more than just a lecture; it is experienced through concrete situations requiring reflection and strategy. For many, this competition is more than a contest—it is a foundational experience for their future careers.

This event also highlights the richness of IÉSEG’s associative model. “It’s an incredibly rewarding system that allows us to professionalize, build connections, and, above all, learn by doing,” explains Titouan. Associations play a vital role in student development, helping them grow, hone their skills, and uncover their hidden talents.
