Equal opportunity: a strategic imperative for IÉSEG
Promoting equal opportunity is a cornerstone of IÉSEG’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. Spearheaded jointly by the Corporate and Social Impact Department and the IÉSEG Foundation, this ambition is reflected in a structured policy designed to foster social diversity and broaden student profiles.
Against a backdrop where inequalities in access to higher education remain stark—particularly within France’s top-tier Grandes Écoles—IÉSEG has chosen to take a multi-layered approach. The School takes action at every stage of the student journey: reaching out to middle and high schoolers before they even apply, providing support throughout their academic life, and guiding them all the way to graduation and into the workforce. This comprehensive approach is designed to dismantle barriers—whether financial, informational, or psychological—and empower everyone to build their own future.
Before IÉSEG: expanding horizons for middle and high school students
One of the primary challenges of equal opportunity lies in access to information and combating self-censorship. For many young people, especially those from lower-income backgrounds, elite business schools feel out of reach or entirely disconnected from their reality.

This is why IÉSEG steps in early, engaging with students in middle and high school. The school actively participates in national initiatives like Les Cordées de la réussite (Stepping Stones to Success), which mentors students from under-resourced urban and rural areas. Concurrently, the school develops partnerships with dedicated non-profits such as Télémaque. This organization champions equal opportunity by supporting motivated, underprivileged youth through a dual-mentorship program involving both a school and a corporate mentor. As part of this partnership, IÉSEG regularly hosts immersion days, allowing young students to experience life at a leading business school firsthand, chat with current students, and envision themselves there. By breaking down mental barriers, IÉSEG aims to build confidence and encourage young people to pursue their highest ambitions.

The school has also gone a step further by opening up some of its short programs to high school students involved in these outreach initiatives. Each year, around ten of them get the opportunity to participate in Short-Term Programs alongside current students, giving them an initial immersive experience at IÉSEG. This highly impactful initiative helps them familiarize themselves with higher education teaching methods, gain confidence, and picture their academic future more concretely.
“Our goal is to step in as early as possible, starting in middle school, to open up horizons,” explains Hena Javaid, Equal Opportunity Project Manager. “Many young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, self-censor or simply lack information. Our role is to show them the wide variety of paths available to them, give them reference points, and build their confidence so they can make informed choices. With this in mind, we guide them through their decision-making process and provide all the information they need to define their academic goals and choose the path that suits them best.”
During their studies: removing obstacles and ensuring an inclusive student experience
Once students are enrolled, the main focus shifts to academic success and the overall student experience. While tuition fees are a major hurdle, they are only part of the equation. The cost of living, access to resources, and integration into campus life also play a decisive role.
To address these challenges, IÉSEG deploys a comprehensive approach that combines financial aid, personalized guidance, and concrete actions to promote inclusion. For instance, tuition fee reductions are automatically applied to students receiving government grants, sliding according to their financial tier. This fee structure is supplemented by support systems funded by the School and its Foundation, with assistance tailored to individual circumstances. When short-term difficulties or unexpected life events arise—affecting either the students or their families—flexible solutions are put in place, including emergency financial aid, adjusted payment plans, or specific support frameworks. This agile mindset ensures help is delivered exactly where and when it is needed most.

The School also works to ensure that all students have access to the essential resources required for academic success. Solidarity initiatives, such as laptop donation drives in partnership with the Boulanger Foundation and L’Oréal, ensure that both domestic and international students have the equipment they need for their studies.
Equal opportunity also means fully participating in campus life. Recognizing that student clubs and associations are key drivers of integration and personal growth, IÉSEG works closely with student organizations—and notably the Student Federation—to make them accessible to everyone.
“The goal isn’t just to get students through the door; it’s to give them the means to fully experience everything that IÉSEG has to offer. Student club life, projects, study abroad opportunities, and group experiences are all vital parts of the student journey. If some students are locked out of these due to financial constraints, we’re just creating new inequalities. Our responsibility, as a certified non-profit higher education institution (EESPIG) and an engaged school, is to ensure these experiences are genuinely open to all.”

Finally, the Excellence Program serves as a major catalyst for guaranteeing equal opportunity, particularly on the international stage. It allows top academic achievers to study at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, such as Harvard, UPenn, or the London School of Economics, regardless of their financial means. Thanks to financial assistance and backing from the School and its Foundation, these exceptional study-abroad opportunities become accessible to students who simply couldn’t have considered them without IÉSEG. Beyond the academic experience, the Excellence Program removes a massive barrier, ensuring that everyone can pursue an education that matches their ambitions and merit, without economic constraints limiting their choices.
“Behind every student, there is a different story, and sometimes invisible vulnerabilities. Our job is to adapt to these situations, offering concrete and sometimes tailor-made solutions. Equal opportunity doesn’t mean treating everyone the same; it means giving everyone the tools to succeed, taking into account their starting point and the obstacles they might face along the way.”
After graduation: securing career success
IÉSEG’s commitment to equal opportunity extends well beyond graduation day. Even with a degree from a top business school, inequalities can still persist, particularly when it comes to professional networking and career opportunities.
To tackle this issue, the School is enhancing its career transition support systems, relying heavily on its alumni network. The existing mentoring program will be further promoted to ensure that all young graduates who need it can benefit from specialized advice, expanded professional networks, and personalized coaching. The goal is clear: to guarantee a successful career launch for everyone, factoring in individual realities and specific needs.
“The aim is to prevent any gap or drop-off after graduation. We know that some students may have smaller professional networks or fewer reference points in the corporate world, which can impact their job search. The idea is to keep supporting them, particularly through mentorship, to give them every opportunity to kickstart their careers successfully,” concludes Hena.
A continuous journey
Through this strategy, IÉSEG is reaffirming its commitment to taking concrete action toward greater social diversity. It is an evolving process—one that builds on existing frameworks while regularly integrating new initiatives to tackle emerging challenges.
By mobilizing its staff, Foundation, students, and partners, the school is steadily building a dedicated ecosystem focused on a shared goal: enabling everyone to access higher education and truly thrive within it.
