Emma GOUBARD
Master in Fashion Management, 2025
Junior Product Manager, Dior
France
I work in men’s knitwear development at Dior, where I started as an assistant product manager before moving into my current role as a junior product manager. My role is to liaise between the designers and manufacturers. Based on the designers’ sketches, I need to fully understand their vision – the type of yarn, construction, details and finishes they have in mind – and then communicate this information to the manufacturers. This involves numerous discussions, coordination meetings and several rounds of prototypes before arriving at the final product.
I really enjoyed my year in the Master in Fashion Management at IÉSEG, particularly because it provides a truly 360-degree view of the fashion industry. It is a sector that encompasses a wide range of professions, and the program helps students better understand their specificities and explore different career paths. The international nature of the Master is also extremely enriching: being surrounded by students from all over the world and studying in English is particularly relevant in an industry where English is ubiquitous.
I particularly enjoyed the courses at Istituto Marangoni, which provide valuable product knowledge: understanding fabrics, patterns and the different stages of production. This knowledge is very useful in my role, but I believe it is relevant to all fashion professionals. Understanding what goes on behind a product makes it easier to communicate with marketing teams and explain the constraints and challenges involved in its development.
The very practical courses focusing on different careers in the fashion industry were also extremely valuable. For example, the course on fashion shows provided an insight into all the steps involved in putting on a show and helped us identify what appealed to us and what did not. The brand management courses, meanwhile, gave me a better understanding of the high standards expected by luxury fashion houses.
It was this combination of business and product-focused learning that convinced me to choose the program. The many industry professionals who contribute to the program also bring a very practical dimension to the curriculum. Their experience helps students gain a better understanding of what different roles actually involve and what the luxury industry expects from its professionals. The sessions with the Career Center and the masterclasses, particularly the one on merchandising, were also very helpful.
The Master confirmed that I was on the right career path while also opening my mind to other possibilities. I would advise students who want to work in fashion to be curious, open-minded and genuinely interested in the industry. Fashion is closely connected to art, history and sociology, and there are many different ways to find your place and thrive.
