Big Data Analytics: MSc Participants Sharpen R Programming Skills

IÉSEG School of Management’s MSc. in Big Data Analytics for Business trains its participants to become data-driven managers. The focus of the program is on shaping the participants’ business knowledge, their methodological readiness and their technological skills.

bigdata-home2To strengthen participants’ programming skills, IÉSEG has decided to introduce them to the statistical software package and programming language R (www.r-project.org), together with other statistical software packages and languages like SAS, SQL and Visual Basic for Applications. Therefore, it is partnering up with Datacamp.com (www.DataCamp.com), the largest online interactive learning platform for data science (focused on R) and having headquarters in Cambridge (USA) and Leuven (Belgium).

Dr. Jonathan Cornelissen, CEO of Datacamp.com, describes what makes the learning platform so unique: “We’re focused on learning by doing.  This means every participant gets their own R session on the platform and can play around with R in the comfort of their browser without the need to install anything. Participants then have to solve challenges with R, and we provide instant personalized feedback on what participants are doing: helping them to find the right solution in case they make a mistake and congratulating them when they find a correct solution to the problem at hand.”

“Over 220,000 participants (and counting!) already enjoyed this learning by doing approach and we continue to work with great academic and industry partners to build the best learning experience for data science. Furthermore, we have created a DataCamp for Groups feature that allows for blended learning approaches at universities and business schools.”

“I truly belief that using new online teaching technologies in our Big Data program,  together with traditional classes, has many advantages”, adds Prof. Kristof Coussement, Academic Director of the MSc. in Big Data Analytics for Business. “By creating a hybrid learning environment that combines online lectures based on learning by doing on the Datacamp.com platform with offline support if needed, we are able to closely monitor the advances of every individual participant in the program. The learning data generated on Datacamp.com gives us the right tool to design for each and every participant a tailor-made learning experience”.
